I want to say a few words about the recent insurance company behavior in Michigan. WE all know that insurance companies have been running a smear campaign on our plan that will hold insurance companies accountable while strengthening consumer protections.  These expensive radio ads, automated phone calls began even before the committee hearings began. The insurance companies are using these intimidation tactics in order to protect the special interest treatment they've been getting here in Michigan. On behalf of house leadership, I want to make one thing crystal, very crystal clear, we will not allow insurance companies to hold Michigan's families hostage. Again, we will not allow insurance companies to hold our Michigan families hostage. The attack ads and robo calls prove that insurance companies will stop at nothing to protect their profits, even those that they rake in by wrongfully denying consumers legitimate claims. We'll not be intimated by the deep pockets of the industry or any other special interest group. There are too many people who's lives have been destroyed because Mi has failed to keep its consumer protection laws in line with those in 46 other states. Insurance companies have been trying to make this about anything other than bad practices that their industry uses to boost profits. The companies claim that protecting consumers with the same laws used to protect residents in 46 other states will cost jobs and raise rates. That's their claim. Any time lawmakers put consumers ahead of special interests they roll out the same-old -tired scare tactics, this plan will cost Mi jobs, this plan will raise rates.  Well I want to take a moment to look at the real economic consequences of Michigan's current laws, or the lack thereof I should say.  When an insurance company breaks its promise to a consumer, it has devastating consequences. Families lose their homes to foreclosure.  Seniors and others exhaust their life savings. The friends, the lives of our friends and loved ones are destroyed. And sometimes they even die because they've not received the help that they were promised. And we are no longer going to let insurance companies get away with this, we'll not let them hurt Michigan families just so CEOs can pad their pockets. Let me say this, insurance companies that play by the rules, treat consumers fairly, have nothing to fear from stronger consumer protections. Nothing to fear.  If a company plays by the rules, that's what we're looking for in Michigan. But those that don't should be held accountable.
