MILAN – Local public safety leaders today praised Representatives Kathy Angerer (D-Dundee) and Kate Ebli (D-Monroe) for supporting a budget that keeps firefighters and police on the streets, helping to protect families from crime, terrorism and other emergencies.
"During the budget crisis, there were some at the Capitol who wanted to gut funding for firefighters and police officers in our communities," said Milan Fire Chief David Webb. "Representatives Angerer and Ebli stood with our families and put the safety of our children and our loved ones ahead of partisan politics. We applaud their vote to pass a budget that invests in our communities and makes them great places to live, work and raise our families."
Angerer and Ebli voted to support a budget early Monday that protects crucial funding for police and fire protection in local communities.
"I am deeply gratified to have the support of our local public safety leaders," Angerer said. "I understand how crucial it is for us to have firefighters and police officers to keep our families safe. Adequate public safety funding is vital for strong communities."
The budget plan will give the state a long-term savings of hundreds of millions through cuts and reforms. The plan also contains provisions for a continuation budget.
"We made great strides by passing this budget, but our work is far from over," Ebli said. "As we get our state back on the road to economic recovery, I will continue fighting to ensure that our public safety departments have the resources and funding they need to give our families full police and fire protection. By strengthening our communities, we will provide a boost to Michigan's economy – and that will help our state attract businesses that bring the good-paying jobs of the 21st century global economy to Michigan."
