Angerer Votes for Plan to Create Jobs, Spur College Development

Plan is part of overall initiative to create 29,000 jobs statewide

LANSING – State Representative Kathy Angerer (D-Dundee) today voted for a plan to clear the path for $33 million worth of projects at Washtenaw County Community College (WCCC) and Monroe County Community College (MCCC). The plan now heads to the Governor for her signature.

"We will be reaping the benefits of this plan for years to come," Angerer said. "By investing in our students, we are building the highly-skilled workforce we need to attract high-tech companies that are looking to relocate in Michigan. This is an important step toward creating jobs now and attracting the new jobs we need to boost our economy and move Michigan forward."

The two local projects were part of an effort to speed up development at universities and community colleges across the state and create jobs now for Michigan workers. The plan passed by the House today will create 8,329 jobs across the state by funding construction projects at universities and community colleges.

WCCC will receive funding to complete a new facility for occupational education and training programs, while the funding allocated to MCCC will go toward completing its New Career Technology Center. The two projects are expected to create 528 local jobs.

The plan passed today is part of larger initiative to create more than 29,000 jobs across the state. The overall initiative included hundreds of construction projects at universities, colleges, airports, military facilities and state parks.

"Our workers are the backbone of our state – getting them back on the job is essential to getting Michigan back on track," Angerer said. "My colleagues in the House and I originally passed this plan in June. While I'm thrilled to have a final agreement, I'm very disappointed that it took the Senate three months to realize how much our working families need these jobs. Now that these projects have been approved, we can concentrate on putting our residents back to work and making Michigan a better place to live, work and raise a family."
