Recently, we had a rally to raise awareness about the disorder of Autism. We filled the Capitol Lawn about this disorder that affects 1 in 150 children. We wanted to heighten awareness about House Bill 5527, about excluding children from insurance coverage. It's arbitrary to exclude children, its flat-out wrong, and raising awareness with the legislature is one way that we can ensure that children will be covered for this very serious disorder.

Hello, I'm State Representative Kathy Angerer with a message for a successful hunting season. When it comes to hunting, remember the TAB-K rule. T - means treat every firearm as if it is loaded. A - means always point the muzzle of your firearm in a safe direction. B - means to be certain of your target and what lies beyond, and K - means keep your finger off the trigger until you're ready to shoot. I'm State Representative Kathy Angerer.

Have a safe and successful hunting season.

I’m introducing legislation to provide financial support to Michigan residents who are deployed overseas as part of their service in the National Guard or Reserves. Our soldiers and their families are making tremendous sacrifices to serve our country. They serve as a constant reminder that freedom isn’t free, and we must stand by them, both at home and abroad. These bills will provide a tax credit to employers who make up the difference between a soldier’s National Guard or Reserve pay and his or her work salary, and will provide a $2,500 tax credit to dependents and spouses of National Guardsmen who have served overseas for more than three months. Service in the National Guard and Reserves can result in significant financial hardship. We must do everything we can to support our men and women in uniform, and these bills will give them a well deserved boost. I’m proud to introduce these bills.

On January 1st, 2006, a ban on new trash landfills in Michigan will expire. For years, Michigan has become the region’s dumping ground because we’re a cheap place for other people’s garbage. The reason we’re cheap? We have an abundance of landfills. More landfills will open the floodgates to more trash from Canada and other states like Ohio and Wisconsin. Our communities have paid the price. We call on Republicans to end their strategy of delay and stand up for Michigan families and extend the ban on new landfills before it’s too late.

This winter season will be especially difficult for seniors and those on a fixed income. Winter heating bills are expected to increase dramatically this year due to higher demand and lower production at natural gas facilities affected by hurricanes Katrina and Rita. My colleagues in the Michigan House and I have introduced legislation to provide help to citizens struggling to pay high heating bills. Our bills will, among other things: ban utility companies from shutting off heat service during the winter; increase energy assistance funds; and give residents a tax deduction if they winterize their homes. You don't have to wait for this legislation to become law. There is help available now. The Michigan Department of Human Services offers help with home heating and weatherization costs to ease the burden on our citizens during our long winter season. The department offers basic heating assistance through Michigan's Home Heating Credit; crisis assistance for those facing energy emergencies, including energy-related home repairs; and weatherization assistance to low-income households. These services reduce energy use and lower utility bills. To get more information about heating assistance programs, go to www.michigan.gov/heatingassistance.

House Democrats have introduced legislation to hold corporations accountable when they engage in wrongdoing and endanger workers' pensions. Our residents work for decades, expecting that their pensions and retirement plans will be secure. We cannot allow corporations to hurt our workers by destroying their retirement and then turn around and give CEOs exorbitant compensation packages. This package will hold corporations accountable for their actions and protect our working families. As part of this package, I have authored a bill to protect corporate whistleblowers--the brave men and women who expose corporate wrongdoing. We must protect them from retaliation and encourage others to step forward.
