LANSING – House Majority Floor Leader Kathy Angerer (D-Dundee) is currently displaying seven pieces of artwork by local artists in her Capitol office. The paintings depict the Battle of the River Raisin during the War of 1812. The Monroe Art League's 1812 River Raisin Battlefield and Bicentennial Art Contest loaned the award-winning paintings to Angerer.
"I'm extremely proud to bring these pieces from Monroe County to the Capitol," Angerer said. "Each painting illustrates the talent and dedication of our local residents, as well as their appreciation for the history of our community. These works of art show everyone who comes through my office a little bit of what makes Monroe County so special."
The Monroe Art League's contest aims to develop new artwork related to the 1812 Battle of the River Raisin in Monroe and its upcoming bicentennial. Local artists Catherine Rehbein, Frances A. Maedel, James Tidwell, and Irene Kuehnlein created the award-winning pieces.
The Battle of the River Raisin, also known as the Battle of Frenchtown, was the largest battle on Michigan soil and one of the largest in the War of 1812.
