LANSING – The Southwest Lake Erie Chapter (SWLEC) of Waterfowl U.S.A. recently honored House Majority Floor Leader Kathy Angerer (D-Dundee) by presenting her with the 2009 Outstanding Sportsperson award.
"I am extremely honored to be recognized by the Southwest Lake Erie Chapter for the work I'm doing to protect our natural resources," Angerer said. "Our majestic natural resources and Great Lakes are what make us special here in Michigan. As residents of this great state, we must be responsible stewards of our land, air and water, and I'm proud to be recognized for my commitment to preserving our natural resources."
The award was presented to Angerer at the 6th Annual Waterfowl U.S.A. banquet in Temperance in recognition of her outstanding contributions to conservation. In the 94th Legislature, Angerer was a lead sponsor of the historic renewable energy standard and energy efficiency plan, and helped protect the Great Lakes and other bodies of water by passing the "Great Lakes, Great Michigan" plan.
Waterfowl U.S.A. is the only national nonprofit conservation organization dedicated to using funds in the areas in which they are raised for local and state waterfowl projects. It was founded by biologists for the purpose of preserving and improving wintering and breeding habitat within the United States. The SWLEC, founded in 2002 by a group of local sportsmen and sportswomen, is committed to preserving America's wetlands and works to improve habitat conditions for ducks.
"While we have made great strides in protecting our natural resources in recent years, there is still more work to be done," Angerer said. "I look forward to continuing to work with Waterfowl U.S.A. and other groups to protect our land, air and water, and ensure our natural resources can be enjoyed for generations to come."
