During her time as the Director of Communications for the Dundee Community Schools, Angerer was one of the first citizens in her community to respond when the school learned it was facing a serious overcrowding problem. She joined forces with a group of parents, educators, teachers and local leaders to pass a much needed bond issue and build a new high school from the ground up.
Angerer carried that same collaborative spirit and dedication with her to the State House where she is well-regarded for providing exceptional service to the people and communities she serves. Angerer is gratified to have helped people get out of the foreclosure process, get needed medical equipment and supplies and advocate for constituents on cases involving consumer fraud. In addition she has helped countless others obtain unemployment benefits, state tax refunds and other state benefits and services.
When there is a need for a legislative solution to a problem, the people of the 55th District have found Angerer to be just as attentive and responsive. Angerer has authored legislation to fix problems with railroad crossing inspections and the Michigan Promise Grant program; each brought to her by residents of her district. In the 2007 – 2008 legislative session, Angerer sponsored legislation that is now law, creating a statewide Patient Safety Organization to which all state hospitals have to report adverse events for the purpose of learning from mistakes and improving patient safety. Angerer has also championed health care coverage for children with autism after learning about the financial and emotional devastation families experience in caring for children with autism.
In recognition of Angerer’s effectiveness, leadership and bipartisanship, her colleagues elected her Majority Floor Leader, for the 95th Session of the Legislature. As Majority Floor Leader, Angerer is charged with setting the overall agenda and direction for the House of Representatives. It is Angerer’s responsibility as Majority Floor Leader to run the House agenda, call for votes and share responsibility for decisions on procedural matters. Angerer served as Assistant Floor leader during the 94th Legislature.
Angerer also serves as Chair of the House Committee on Ethics and Elections and as a member of the Oversight and Investigations Committee for the 95th Legislature. She has made it a priority to hold elected officials to the highest of standards and to run an effective and efficient Legislature. In the last session of the Legislature, Angerer Chaired the Health Policy Committee, and served as a member of the committees on Education, Agriculture, and Energy and Technology.
In recognition of her service to the 55th District, Angerer has been named Legislator of the Year by the Michigan Pharmacists' Association, the Hemophilia Foundation of Michigan and the Michigan Agri-Business Association. In 2008 she became only the second legislator to receive the Michigan Health and Hospital Association’s Special Recognition Aware. She also was recognized as a Public Policy Health Champion in 2008 by the Michigan Department of Community Health and received the 2008 Excellence in Education Award from the Michigan Association for Computer Users in Learning. The Southwest Lake Erie Chapter of Waterfowl U.S.A. recently honored Majority Floor Leader Kathy Angerer as Outstanding Sportsperson of the Year for 2009.
A lifelong resident of Monroe County, Angerer has five adult children and is married to Russ Angerer.
